Looking to buy a waterproof phone case for general outdoor use...mountaineering, mountain biking and sea kayaking. Ideally IPX7 rated and of Ortleib, Seal Line type quality.

Have also come across Oxford branded gear mainly aimed at the motor cycle market.

What's the experience of the UKHW collective?

I really liked the lifeproof case I had for my last phone. lasted a couple of years oh heavy battering and yielded a pristine phone at the end.

I had an AquaPac StormProof case for my phone for a few years - used it mainly for keeping phone/cash/cards in pocket when cycling/top of rucksack/etc and it was great. Sadly, new phone is too big for that one and I'm back to using a Sainsbury's zip lock sandwich bag.

Just went to get a web address for you and it looks like they've got a new TrailProof case that might be the one to go for now - for me, at least:

I have a griffin case for my iPad, it seems pretty rugged.

The other option is to buy a waterproof phone. http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/best-waterproof-phones/

Lomo are good at this sort of thing.

They're like a sort of Glaswegian aquatic Alpkit - basic no-frills kit sold directly at low prices, and very good customer service.

They did do a more substantial phone case - I have one and it's seen my phone through a fair bit of upside-down time whilst kayaking ineptly with it in a buoyancy aid pocket. Can't find that one now though, maybe they've stopped making it.

Yep ... a plus one here for Lomo as well

Thanks for the tips ... liking the look of the lifeproof kit

I use a small ortlieb bag. ( A smaller version of their mapcases. ) You can operate the screen through the case. Cost is less than £15

The Lifedge case is easy to snap on and off - see here: youtube.com/watch?v=nJ0Mi9WQvqA&

I have one for the iPhone 5s and it's withstood fairly harsh Scottish winter conditions. The enlarged button on the side allows you to take photos easily when wearing gloves. I wouldn't have paid the original price of £70 but it was a bargain at half price. I remember reading a direct comparison with the Lifeproof case and there wasn't much to call between them, but the Lifedge just edged it.

I researched the same question and plumped for a ziplock sandwich bag. Not because it was cheap (20 for £1) but because it was by far the lightest and most compact option. If worried about waterproofness just double bag it.

I take my phone with me cycling in a food bag which I wrap round it and stuff in my pocket. I've done 4 hours in torrential rain without it leaking.

I use a case made by "Dri-Dock" which comes with the added bonus of a waterproofed headphone jack (!). I've used it sea kayaking and snorkelling, swimming in the pool, at a waterpark...its bombers kit. Only cost about £10 too.

I hesitate to admit to buying from amazon, but I bought this about 18 months ago...

It's still going strong in spite of being treated very roughly.

Loksak - available in several sizes, ideal for phones, currency, passport etc. when trekking.
