Why do down bags look so lofty and full on websites selling them, especially manufacturers pictures. Yet they are half empty in reality. What do they stuff into the bag for photos?

I bet you store the bag in the compress sack, compressed... and haven't washed it, ever despite the bag being over 10 years old.

The answer is in your question.

I used my PipeDream 600 recently. It's been sitting in its huge storage bag since spring, waiting for the cooler weather. When I came to stuff it into its stuff sack, I thought it would never fit; huge bulges of downy goodness kept squishing back out.

But it all went in nicely in the end. And lofted up nicely when I took it out again.

Viagra led to mass unemployment of fluffers - they now work for sleeping bag manufacturers.

I used to work in studio photography and actually helped out on the ME and Rab catalogues back in the day.

Sleeping bags are filled with air and placed in a vacuum. As the air tries is sucked out the bag expands.

Simple really when you think about it.
