EVEREST THE HARD WAY by DOUG SCOTT, CBE & PAUL BRAITHWAITE - STOCKPORT - THURS 17 NOV
Legendary mountaineer Doug Scott will be tell the story of how he and Dougal Haston made the first ascent of Everest by its massive South West Face in September 1975. Their epic climb would go down in mountaineering history as 'Everest The Hard Way'.
Paul (Tut) Braithwaite - described by the Mountain Heritage Trust as ‘one of the great un-sung heroes of recent British climbing history’ - will tell how he and Nick Estcourt solved the problem of the highly technical rock band barring access to Everest’s summit. This proved to be the key to the climb and paved the way for Doug and Dougal.
Using a lightweight approach, Doug went on to continue his outstanding mountaineering career – making over forty first ascents in the Himalaya and Greater Ranges. He also felt a need to set out to help the mountain people of Nepal who had helped him achieve these climbs and did this by setting up the charity Community Action Nepal. Doug will provide an update on the progress made with reconstruction of CAN projects, such as health posts and schools, which were so badly damaged in the Nepal earthquakes in 2015.
Proceeds from the talk – sponsored by Bromleys Solicitors LLP - will go to supporting the work of Community Action Nepal. There will be a sale of Nepalese goods, posters and of signed framed mountain prints. Doug will also be signing copies of the first volume of his autobiography ‘Up And About’.
