Everest The Hard Way by Doug Scott, CBE - Bristol - Tues 25 Oct
Legendary mountaineer, Doug Scott CBE returns to the south west for the first time in several years to tell the story of how he and Dougal Haston made the first ascent of Everest by its massive South West Face in September 1975. They were the first Britons to stand on the summit of the world's highest mountain. Their epic climb would go down in mountaineering history as 'Everest The Hard Way'.
Using a lightweight approach, Doug went on to continue his outstanding mountaineering career - making over forty first ascents in the Himalaya and the Greater Ranges. He also felt a need to help the mountain people of Nepal who had helped him achieve these climbs and did this by setting up the charity Community Action Nepal. Doug will provide an update of the progress being made with the reconstruction of CAN's health and schools projects which were so badly damaged in the Nepal earthquakes in 2015.
This will be a Paul Esser Memorial Lecture, in association with UBSS and UBNC, supporting the work of Community Action Nepal. The evening will include the sale of Nepalese goods, posters and signed framed prints. Doug will also be signing copies of the first volume of his autobiography 'Up And About'.
