Hi all,

Trying to get away next year around February to get some skiing in but also try and get some ice climbing in too.

Does anyone know any areas or can recommend any resorts in Europe where this is possible?

cheers,

Neil

Serrai di Sottoguda in the Dolomites - great varied ice climbing with very easy access and reliable ice by that time of the season, with Marmolada/Arraba just 5 minutes up the road, and Civetta 10 minutes down the road.

Totally biased for obvious reasons - but it is damn good.

Saas-Fee has an indoor ice wall, and outdoor stuff in the gorge nearby. No idea of grades, but the indoor wall is pretty much vertical.

Chamonix , specifically Argentier. Great skiing on the Grand Montet and ice climbing all within a reasonable walk. Easy to get to from Geneva.

La Crémerie

Where's the skiing? Assuming the OP means downhill skiing.

There is some ice climbing at Val d'Isere. http://www.ukhillwalking.com/forums/t.php?t=33695

For extensive ice climbing and skiing the obvious answer is Argentiere, as has already been suggested.

Celiac is a ski station just not a very big one, a few lifts only (5 I think but still skiing), its the same car park for the king as the ice, there are lots of smaller ski station in the Queyras, that have ice near by. if you are planning on having car you could easily use resorts like puy st vincent or others in the haute alps with a ice trip?

Early or late Feb? Late Feb may be too late for good ice in many of the locations suggested

Strictly Celiac is a disease! Thanks for the information on Ceillac. It looks like one of those micro ski resorts that only the French go to and I hadn't previously heard of it.

Dam auto spell on the iPad 😉, yes it a small resort don't think it would do a weeks skiing, there is a lot of off piste or touring options there, I think if you get a lift pass it covers a bunch of the smaller resorts in that area,

Suppose it depends on the % off ski to ice time the op wants?

When you say beginners ice do you mean total beginners? If so celliac is probably ok, but even WI3 can be pretty steep, and it is all multi pitch rather than top ropeable .

Bolted belays though and easy walk off a big path at the top.

Argentiere.... well there is the cremerie, which is probably better for absolute beginners, especially the easy stuff on the right hand side (you can actually set up a top rope on some of the bottom bits by getting to them from the side I seem to remember) but.... other than that there isn't anything you could get on that's under scottish V ish really and once you ab in you are pretty committed.

If the focus is more skiing than climbing you could do cremerie for max two days maybe and have good skiing, but if you want climbing with a little bit of skiing then celliac is probably one of your best bets. It is high as well so likely in condition throughout feb.

If you're travelling by car; and don't need to stay in the resort then Ceillac and the surrounding area would be a good choice. Ceillac sits in the Queyras and being a high north facing site, holds its ice quite well. The area has five small ski stations and lots of off-piste all included in the same day pass. If you site yourself on the edge of the area in Guillestre (about fifteen minutes drive from Ceillac) then you have easy access to the local ski resort Risoul/Vars and lots of ice climbing in the Freissinieres and Fournel Vallees.
