Does anyone volunteer for lowland s&r ?. I was talking to them the other day while they were collecting in tesco and although as a climber, mountain rescue would probably be more suited to me, these are much nearer , so I could respond more. I'm just looking for any information or experiences (good or bad) before I take the plunge. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Yes, I volunteer for a Lowland Rescue team, different sort of missing person that we often search for rather than an MRT. Mainly dementia or despondent. Many teams are also involved in flood/water rescue and other specialist areas.

Happy to chat more if you wish to message me.

Other than playing an occasional victim for training I haven't done anything with my local MRT. I do keep an eagle eye on their online log, partly to see why the police helicopter is over my village this week...

They do both upland and lowland work, and most of the lowland work is missing persons (dementia, vulnerable persons, suicides, drownings etc), more than a few of which turn out to be looking for a body, almost allways suicides - how you'll react to bodies hangings of trees and shotguns to the head is something you might consider vs mountain casualties. I think it can be more challenging for the rescuers. I get the impression much more of the lowland work is with the police.

There is also lowland recovery of injured cyclists from difficult terrain and technical rope access for casualties (e.g. hauling someone up a railway embankment that they fell down.)

Thanks for replying, I hadn't really thought too much about finding dead bodies but I suppose it's something I'll have to deal with, hopefully not too often though. I think flood work is a really good thing, and helping out would definitely be better than being sat at home watching it on the news feeling sorry for the people suffering. I just want to do something that helps people and lowland rescue seems to fit my personality.
