you move the cross to the location you are shooting from, click the middle line to move the direction, then one of the outside lines to move the angle... you then get a visible hills skyline generated

Do you know the 'Fly a Tour' feature of Google Earth too ?

In Google Earth, click on a green peak symbol. You'll get a pop up with an underlined option to fly on a tour. If you click this, it presents a 3D picture which rotates through 360 degrees.

I had seen this before but thanks for the link as I'd lost it.

There's a local mountain I'm planning to run to the summit of when the snow clears. According to this site I should be able to see Mont Blanc from the top (147km away). I'll wait for a clear day.

I just tested it with the view from my window and its pretty accurate even on fairly unknown peaks.
