Drawing a line on a photo?

Can anyone best advise the easiest way to draw a line of ascent on a photo of a mountain? I can obviously use paint or similar but it will look pretty poor.

How can I draw a line that looks half reasonable, without buying Photoshop or similar?

Cheers,

Tom

Stuff drawn in paint doesn't have to look 'pretty poor'

Free software like GIMP is available to do similar jobs.

Excellent, thanks. I'd forgotten about that site so it's great to see some updates. The Frasier scenario is hilarious.

Free software called inkscape does high quality image editing (like paint on roids).

You could import the image into Word, Publisher or open office and use the draw tools.

Lots of options. But it ends up a .doc or .pub or PDF.

Don't use GIMP for this, as it is a pixel based program with similar tools to Photoshop. Inkscape would be the vector graphics tool you are looking for(corresponding to Illustrator in the Adobe package).

Would this do the job? https://sites.google.com/site/betacreator/

Remember finding it ages ago, and downloading, but haven't used it to date.

Wouldn't it be easier to paint the lines on the crag and take a photo?

Reminds me of an art installation on Malham Cove that I saw a long time ago.

Why, my suggestion takes at most 5 mins.

Print it, mark the line with a pen, rephotograph it?

Beta creator is fantastic as it was made for climbers. 10/10.

Why Tom, got a new line to draw onto a topo?
In reply to Tom Ripley Mountain Guide:

Tom,
Use Powerpoint and then you have the option to save as a JPEG.
Or download Irfanview and use that.

Just learning to use paint would be better than most of the options here. Dashed thin width line using the line tool would easily do what you're asking and look absolutely fine.

All sorted. Thanks all.
