"Say something so they will look at you in the face and remember you."

I can see this easily backfiring.
In reply to UKC/UKH Articles: Pretty accurate stuff. What he fails to address is how to navigate you way through the hordes of people wearing high performance outdoor clothing in the centrally heated Arts Centre or Himalayan standrad duvets on Kendal High Street when it's raining and 12°C.

I've never yet paid for food at Kendal and plan to maintain that clean sheet.

That's easy - announce using a megaphone that there's a 50% off sale of Rab Expedition clothing in the Retail Tent and watch the waves of Down and Goretex part before you as you swan up to the bar.

I'm sure it's great fun, but this article makes it sound like an event to be avoided!

My main concern is its all a little bit too commercialised (it's desperately needed a proper fringe scene for decades). A variety of rich outdoor fashion victims come with that commercial territory (not all of whom are bad). Still I've always found plenty of old pals and new nice people to chat enthusiastically to about the festival, climbing and life in general, especially those involved in the films, books, talks and exhibits. I've seen and read so much wonderful stuff over the years and how often in normal life do you get to say thank you, face-to-face, with the people who produced it.
In reply to UKC/UKH Articles:

It's been a right (and expensive) pain in the arse year with assigned seating and compulsory posting of tickets. My mates can't be the only large group of people who can't always commit at the same time. Combine that with a programme that never seems to be fully announced, and we've ended up with a dozen people sitting in different seats, paying far too many sets of postage costs.

I know it's probably hard to organise something like this, and relies on a load of hard work and goodwill, but I hope they don't keep assigned seating next year.

I'll be OK if it stops the daft queues, mass 'fleeces on seats' reservations and occasional mad rush. From a sales perspective it does seem a little odd.

Yeah, I used to go before it was cool, rolling up on my fixie bike in skinny jeans. Or something.

Well... the seat reservation system worked really well IMHO and the festival had really listened on good free things to do to broaden the appeal... loads of talks in the main tent and the two side tents and some were really good. To my perception there was a slight drop in the average age. There was a better range of films with more venues and no overlong expensive but dull euro epics. One of the few negative points (unless I was so pissed in the past I didnt notice) was the brewery bar closed at 1:00am after the saturday night.

I'll post more later on Keith R's other thread.

Agreed!

I thought the stuff going on in the tents was fantastic, and really enjoyed the festival this year. We went to much more in the way of talks than films.

The reserved seats were still a pain for us, but some of the presenters I know say their job was easier this year.

PS Loved the BMC breakfast!

Would have liked to have gone to this but opted for "150 Years of Chamonix" instead. Sir Chris was on top form as expected, but then I guess he's not exactly unused to public speaking.
