I just finished this excellent book by Peter Matthiessen, and wondered if any UKCers have been to the Dolpo / Shey region of Nepal more recently, and how it has changed since Matthiessen's visit in the 1970s. Is it on the standard gap year trekking highway these days, or still quite remote? Are there any snow leopards left? Has the region been stripped bare and desertified by over-grazing and over-hunting, as he feared?
I did wonder what the locals made of this westerner's rather earnest, hippie interpretation of their religion, but the book has some fine travel and nature writing, and some memorable insights. I'd recommend it.

Can't answer your question I'm afraid, save to say that there are still some snow leopards about, at present, but it's certainly one of my desert island books.
