Lots of ranting going on today it seems - this time it's the academics and medics. So, in the interests of transparency, but with no requirement to be too specific, what do you do for a living?

At the moment I'm a student/festival director/editor/lecturer (i.e. jack of all trades...)

Currently working on family tree and history for my children and grandchildren so that it is not lost when I die, and have uncovered some interesting things I didn't know before. Eg a newspaper report of how my paternal grandfather was caught poaching and was fined 15/- ( about £72.50 in today's money) by the magistrates in 1900.

Volunteer footpath checker/reporter for Rambers - signposting in disrepair/vandalised, overgrown footpaths falling into disuse, unofficial diversions and closures, aggressive dogs, aggresive bulls (rare) and horses - (ponies can be little sods!) in fields with footpaths crossing them etc etc. Currently engaged in updating sections of the Sussex Border Path Guide.

Can mend footpaths and gates and fences, and thin woodlands and clear heathlands, do plant surveys and speak half knowledgeably about land management and why corncrake numbers have increased again, and plant wildlife friendly livestock hedges. Hopefully soon I can be paid to take children into woodlands without them coming to harm, and find work which mixes all the bits and pieces I've been learning about together. A family friend has offered me paid work doing carpentry related things with him later on this year which is cool, will be my first job since I developed anxiety etc.

Am trying to find the energy to start a distance Biology A level too, but this seems to be a 'bleargh' summer, got to kick myself up the behind...

I've done things with my local Wildlife Trust, I'm going to try and learn to drive this summer so I can get to where they're meeting, to do with volunteering with the Peak Park people in the Peak district, which is ranger style training, as far as I know. You should be proud, I gather there's a lot of expertise still in the UK, what sort(s) of machines? I think a relative changed his title from director to something more grand after going to America and it being nicely commented on, that director sounded quite lowly for what he did.

I am often told there are lots of small niche machine builders in the UK .One of our drives suppliers,German, says that this is one of the differences between Germany and the UK.Germany has volume, UK has niche.

It is a textile process machine, which I sell to non textile industrial users(most textile machinery has a lot of uses).Textiles per se just does not make a good enough return.

In reply to Tall Clare: I have filled supermarket shelves for 38 years. I am now semi retired and enjoying life living in the south lakes. Due to serious long term health problems I was never able to Perdue a career with a decent income much to my mothers disappointment. Having said that I actually enjoy my job. Also I was the treasurer and trustee of a charity for about 20 years which was unpaid.

I program/do dba setup/try to persuade the dbas they know more than me and they really should be assisting and also spend time handing requirements documents back politely explaining why it wont work, either because it will cost to much for us to build or it doesnt make sense from a client viewpoint.

I was looking for an easy thread to reply too, as I've pretty much nothing to say these days !

Anyway, I'm currently driving a school-bus. Much to my regret, it's not a yellow one- like you see in the U.S- but an awful green ! The kids seem to think that all bus drivers are as thick as two short planks. Perhaps I should fill them in on my - wasted - educational past : Repton and a rather well considered uni somewhere in the North-East of England. Nah, they're not worth it !

I make things up as I go along. I am a design engineer. The pay is usually rubbish.

I have been known to make some money doing survey work (mooring systems and IFR magnetics: I measure stuff and do sums) for the oil and gas industry and may do again if it ever wakes up! The pay is not rubbish (when it exists at all).

I am a RAF Regiment Gunner. I get to do some cool stuff not usually done by old gits but again the pay is rubbish.

I drive trucks. Sometimes I get to drive trucks that I helped to design long ago and I get to drive them to the most beautiful places in the country. Again, the pay is rubbish.

I am Communications Officer of a charity called Kintail Mountain Rescue Team. The best thing about that is doing nice things for people who have had their day go badly wrong. One of the down-sides is that sometimes the best that can be done is to recover their remains.

As some of you will already know, just do NOT start me on helicopters.

In reply to Tall Clare: Happily retired, me. I can recommend it. And though in theory I have all the time I wish to come on here and enjoy the sunny spells and scattered showers that make up the forums, I've scarcely been here at all of late as I've either been enjoying myself or completely knackered. Fun fun fun...

Today was a little bit difficult. Working right in the middle of the National Forest, below the tree line, out of what little wind there was. Gadfly's everywhere biting the ar$e off us. Ran out of water just after lunch time. Only two and a half more weeks until we're completed. It's great working outside!!
