I'm just looking into maps for the Denali National park - can anyone tell me if can you buy anything off the shelf better then the maps in the supertopo guide book - or are maps in the book copies of the best published maps?
Thanks
Tom

we tried and failed. I asked in the shop in Anchorage and their response was, it's out of print.

The maps in Joe's ST guidebook are probably the best quality you will get, in terms of the features, contours etc plus they have the routes marked.

The Bradford Washburn / National Geographic map of Denali itself, including Hunter, Crosson (not Foraker) and the Peters and Muldrow glaciers is very good quality but limited coverage. Not sure if it is still available for purchase anywhere.

The USGS no longer prints its grid topos anymore, but you can centre, download and print what you want from the USGS site(?) and some others sites like http://www.mytopo.com/search.cfm

Thanks - that’s a really good link. saved me a lot of googling! If any one is interested the ST guide maps are the same as the in the link (i presume these are the best for this area even though they are mid-50s in age) but the mytopo ones are slightly better resolution (at least the free previews are)

You might also want to look at Omnimap: http://www.omnimap.com/catalog/usgs3/idxdown.htm and http://www.omnimap.com/catalog/cats/alaska.htm

I buy most of my paper maps there now. It can take a while to sort through their index maps to find the exact map you need, but it's worth it.

They have a great range of maps for mountain areas worldwide, including many of the Finn map series for Nepal but they don't always have everything in stock that they seem to.
