I am going to Saas Fee this summer and am wondering whether a hire car is worthwhile. Is it easy to travel up/down the valley to the various lift stations by bus; or is this a lot easier if you have a car (for Weissmeis etc)? Cost isn't too much of an issue as it'll be split four-ways. Thanks!

Extremely easy. Bus up from the train station very frequent then loads more between the various towns. In fact it makes more sense for there in particular as you cant take cars into Saas Fee proper for the lifts. Can drive directly to Saas Grund lifts though the bus stops 100m away. However a hire car will give you more flexibility for weather etc! Also there is a bit of a road up to the start of the trek to the hut for the great (SE?) ridge of Weissmies, although probably a nice walk there too. Have been in Saas valley twice, once with a car and once without and there was no real difference tbh. The buses around the towns are free too if you stay in the valley

Been to saas 3 times. Public transport to and from the resort is ace, plus bus travel In the valley is fine.

you can head along the valley to Brigg, from there roads and trains go in all directions and to all countries.

If there's 4 of you there might be a financial argument for driving, but Swiss public transport is probably the best in the world and in the Saastal it's effectively free to visitors.

If you are staying in Saas or Saas Grund (including the campsite) then you are entitled to a pass which gives you more or less unlimited free travel in the area. Only the top sections of the big lifts are excluded. It really is a fantastic offer.

No point hiring a car. Buses are on the same regular intervals seven days a week (except for starting at something like 7am rather than 6am on a Sunday). There is a main route from Brig/Visp to Saas Grund and from there an interchange for routes to Saas Fee and to Mattmark (passes Saas Almagell for the path up to Almageller hut for Weissmies). Sitting at the interchange is like groundhog day every 30 minutes as the three buses pull into the exact same positions within 30 seconds of each other!
