I climbed Indicator Right Hand today, and descended No.3 Gully to see what the full impact of yesterday's thaw was:

Routes up high on the ben looked good and just need a bit more of a freeze. Smith's was still fat, just unfrozen today. http://www.masterplan-mountaineering.co.uk/2015/03/smiths-route-tower-scoop...

Don't suppose you got a look at compression Crack, along from the Shroud? have unfinished business with the upper Ice fall!

1st pitch looked complete but quite thin towards the top, I would guess that the top pitch is mush.

First trip to Ben for me on the 20th. Is the north face the of the Ben the most reliable for winter climbing. If so what is the top 3 grade 1 and grade 2 climbs.
And how long does it take to walk from the car park to cic hut.
Thank you.

Keep your options open - plenty other venues may well be in good nick!

Allow 2hrs to the CIC but if you're going well you may well do it in less.

Have a look at the winter conditions page to get an idea of what's been climbed recently - http://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/winter.html

I'd be reasonably optimistic about Stob Coire nan Lochain, which isn't too far away.

If you do end up on the Ben looking for good grade I / II routes, Ledge Route is excellent - don't know about current conditions though.

Anyone know if the icicle on smiths route is formed? or can it only be climbed by the traverse out left?
Cheers
Joe

In reply to Joe Barlow:

Climbed Smiths yesterday, the icicle variation and the 'normal' route are both fat.
