Does anyone know of any shell gloves that are still made? If necessary with a removable inner or a lining that can be cut out without destroying the gloves. Mine are worn out and the two types I have had before seem to be discontinued.

Out of interest, do they need to be gloves? I had some lovely goretex Outdoor Designs ones back in the dim distant and loved them for climbing and walking but the (many) sealed seams round the fingers went and they leaked profusely. Replaced them with some Extremities goretex unlined mitts which are perfect for walking purposes. I tend to use softshell gloves (Marmot ones) for winter climbing and live with wet hands after a while then swap them for a dry pair.

Yes. After thirty years of experimentation, I found a winter climbing glove system which really worked for me. It involved shell gloves, but now I can't find any.

Not if I can possibly help it - these things are pretty simple and ought to come relatively cheap.

I sympathise Robert, I have been trying for thirty years to find a glove to use in winter. Keep falling back on the remnants of my Helly Hansen polar mitts collection.

Managed to find some thin stretchy liner gloves this weekend, thought nobody made them anymore.

Given up on outdoor shops for glove trials now, the best so far are some £4 winter work gloves.

Lomo in Glasgow have an interesting range of gloves, intend to call in to try on sometime.

Should be rather cheap...

And I think some of the Extremeties (Terra-Nova) gloves are a shell and removable insulation layer, at least the old ones I have are like that.

I tried on a pair of either OR or Black Diamond gloves in Manchester a couple of weeks ago that were shell and liner. Can't for the life of me remember what they were but it was downstairs in Nevis Sport. I do remember that they were about £140 though. That stuck in the mind.

I was hungover in extremis at the time but my mind is leaning towards OR.

*Edit*
OR Arete gloves. Currently up on Sport Pursuit for half price. Nice coincidence.

Try the Rab Alliance Glove. Remove the Primaloft liner gloves. This will leave you with a very dexterous, leather palmed waterproof gauntlet. They have a very thin brushed lining. You'll need to size them a couple of sizes smaller.

These are the ones I've been using. They have been excellent. Unfortunately now discontinued.

These and the OR Arete mentioned both have a liner built into the shell. In my experience, this just gets damp and makes getting damp inners on and off a pain and at worst inverts and gets completely caught up. I had some Mountain Hardwear ones with a liner which I cut out, but it didn't do the rest of the gloves much good!

Sizing also need to be generous. Many XL gloves are nowhere near big enough for me.

These feel god when worn, the leather to other section stitching does not look that well sealed though.

I have Lomo and other Neoprene canoe/kayak gloves. When wearing them in cold weather when canoeing, your hands are mega warm, even after immersion. Never risked wearing them winter climbing but it might be worth trying.

Hate to recommend something so expensive but Arctyrex Alpha SV gloves have exceeded all my expectations. I waited until the shop not managing to shift them at £200 reduced them to £99. That was 3 years ago and they are still the best gloves I've had (except for those blue outdoor designs ones, so good they stopped making them).
The liner in the AR is still effective after the 3 years but of course you can put anything inside.

Thanks. I think I'll order a pair of these (even if they are no good or only last a few routes, can't go to far wrong at £6.50). Certainly worth a try before giving the £200 Arcteryx ones serious consideration! It sounds like they are a genuine 1 layer shell that I can wear my dextrous climbing gloves of choice under and take off once my hands are warm.

.........Aargggh....out of stock......I bet they have discontinued them!

The Black Diamond Access glove might fit the remit. Waterproof outer shell with completely removable inner glove. They still appear to be made and go up to XL.

Damn... it looks like since 2014 they made the liner fixed!! The older models e.g. http://blackdiamondequipment.com/en/mens-gloves/access-glove-BD801218BLAKS_... definitely have a removable liner

I think you're looking for the holy grail

The shell is pertex, so maybe not very tough or weatherproof...... maybe worth thinking about? Anyone tried these?

Seems like it. Such an obvious thing to make though!

Yes, I have a pair which I use for winter walking and easy climbing. Certainly fine for that.

I use either thin fleece gloves or mountain equipment guide gloves for climbing.

Might be worth looking at some of the ski brands etc in case there's anything to be found there.

i had these a while back, shredded them on the Starav ridge, but good until then. Very dry.

Thanks. Almost certainly wouldn't get away with a Large..... many gloves are too small for me in XL.

Shall check them out in Tisos (though I think I already have!).

Hi Robert, I have a pair of XL Mountain Hardwear gloves that I was planning to sell. They're a waterproof gauntlet style shell (Conduit membrane) with a completely detachable and removable fleece inner glove (the inner is only kept in place with a small velcro strip in the inner cuff).

I bought them a few years ago but have only worn them three times I think, there's not a mark on them. They're also a generous XL so by the sounds of it they certainly wouldn't be too small for you. I haven't got round to taking photos of them yet, but can do so if you want to find out more?

Hacked out the thin fleecy liner and plastic layer to leave a pure shell big enough for my climbing inners of choice. Probably not very waterproof, but should do the job for a few routes which I would be happy with for £6.50!

Have a look at cycling suppliers. There are various full finger cycling shell gloves available (or aleast there used to be) which are cut for a certain amount of dexterity and can be stuffed with liners. A bit of seamseal on the seams will make them a bit more waterproof and last a bit longer.
