Has anyone used these two services/applications, and in conjunction with each other? If so, i'd be interested in hearing your experiences, particularly Gaia GPS on an iPhone. Is it any good and is it worth the cost?
Not used either. I use Viewranger on an Android phone (Motorolla Moto E) and find it truly excellent. You can plan routes and record tracks. Gives altitude, speed etc with stats.
