As a follow up to my old, and now locked, thread http://www.ukhillwalking.com/forums/t.php?t=571644

BMC Insurance now at last specifically covers some Skimo racing!

https://www.thebmc.co.uk/new-and-improved-bmc-travel-insurance

taken from the policy document:

"Recreational Skiing activities including: On-Piste, Off-Piste (with or without a guide), Cross Country/Nordic/Langlauf, Dry Slope/Indoor Slope, Backcountry/Ski Touring, Downhill, Telemark, Big Foot Skiing, Mono Skiing, Heli/CatSkiing, Glacier Skiing and Ski Mountaineering. Ski Mountaineering racing in www.ismf-ski.org and www.skimoscotland.co.uk approved events only."

Shame that races like the PDG I did last year and the Patrouille des Aiguilles Rouges I'm doing this year are not ISMF races and thus not covered. But definitely a move the right direction.

In reply to NickBrown:

This is certainly a step in the right direction.

However, since the La Grande Trace - the venue for this years GB Championships which is supported by the BMC - is not a Skimo Scotland event or an ISMF event (to the best of my knowledge), this event will not be covered.

In reply to NickBrown:

There is a full list of national events on the ISMF website here - http://www.ismf-ski.org/www/content/ismf-intranet-database?page=ListEventNa... - i.e. this means that these events have been 'approved' by the ISMF and will be covered by BMC insurance.

Unfortunately Le Grand Trace is not currently on this list for 2015, although it has been in the past, it looks like the FFME have not registered any of their races yet. I will contact the FFME and ask them to get this event registered on the ISMF website and it will then be covered by BMC insurance.

If a BMC member wishes to take part in an event / race that is not approved, then they should contact us with the details and we will try to help.

It's not that much of a problem if you're only doing one or two races in the Alps each season, just get a 'license decouvert' for each race. That's what I've done on the seasons when I'm not doing enough racing to justify getting a full ffme license. That's the situations for French races anyway, not sure if it's the same for Swiss, Italian etc.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the providing the additional details and the offer of help. It's great to see the BMC getting engaged with Skimo racing.

I've entered the Patrouille des Aiguilles Rouges race (http://www.aiguilles-rouges.ch ) in March. This does not appear be on the ISMF list. Are you able to help with getting this race approved for insurance cover?

It would also be great to see the Grande Course series (http://www.grandecourse.com ) of races covered, and in particular the PDG. I did this last year and had to arrange individual insurance for this with the broker directly. I'm keen to do this race again in 2016.

Or you could join FFME and get an annual license through them. I imagine that'll be less hassle and cheaper than organising it with an individual broker. That's what I've done on seasons I've done a lot of racing.

FFME licences appear to only be available to those that live in France.

Even if was available to non french residents I'd still need uk travel insurance to cover being repatriated etc.

I have been researching the topic this year.

For individual license in FFME you need to be French resident.

However, when joining a club, this is no longer needed (as far as I remember). I don't know the FFME details as I finaly went with a CAF licence: I joined a CAF club and got the insurance specified here: http://www.ffcam.fr/assurance.html#.VL-ZBEeG_wA (scroll down for English version)

This covers the repatriation cost to your country of residence and the insurance is for the residents of the EU. Also it covers all the SkiMo races in Europe as long as you are not a professional racer.

Have a look at the points 2.1 and 2.2 of the leaflet for details. This licence covers also the trail running comps etc, as well as on-piste skiing.
Cheers
