I want some socks for wearing with my rock boots; what should I get?

I normally do longish days of easy trad, hence I don't mind losing some performance by wearing a thin sock to get a bit more warmth and comfort. But I guess something snug with minimal slip between the sock and my foot is what I want. Any pointers?

Merino? Some kind of sport specific sock (without the 'padding' at the heel)
