Hi,

I am getting into the ski touring scene this coming season. Can anyone recommend me some easyish routes with fairly straight forward decents to get me started?

Many thanks

Chris

These guys are worth a look. Been out a few times, they usually manage to tailor day so everyone gets what they're looking for.

Hi Chris, ski centre to macdui is normally reliable and was one of our early ski tours.

Always enjoyable with some of the best views in the country.

Usual navigation caveats apply of course.

"Unfortunately, more than any other winter mountain activity, ski touring requires particular conditions to be at its best. "

That's a really important point. If you're a climber too there's plenty of days when climbing is going to be the best option for the conditions. I've said this to myself every winter day for the last 5 years but I still end up going skiing in the deluded hope of good conditions.

You mean snow on the ground? What more do you need?

Your post comes across as very negative if ski touring is so disappointing why do you bother? I actually think ski touring on Scotland is really good it's the varying conditions that I like, more challenging.

Most people like touring to find powder, generally like looking for the Holy Grail in Scotland, no doubt I've had some of the worst days ever touring in Scotland, and of course some of the best, but they are the exception.
The snow transforms quickly in Scotland leading to poor conditions due to the low altitude.

I'm not being negative, just agreeing with the point Dan Bailey made that good ski touring conditions are much rarer than good climbing conditions in Scotland.

There are far more variables that need to come together for good touring nick.

Its nice to be able to see where I'm going, and not to blown overt the wind. If the snow is deep enough that I don't damage my skis that's an advantage
