I'm in the Fagaras for a week over Christmas, traversing the main easterly-westerly ridge (or seeing how far I can get) and was wondering if anyone knew whether the conditions would make snow shoes a good idea? I'll resent myself for having them if they were not needed.

In reply to Ranger Ray: Haven't been there, but I contacted this guy http://www.mountainguide.ro/contact-iulian-cozma-hiking-guide/ a few years ago about ice climbing potential in the Fargaras and he said something along the lines of "too much snow"

I'm in Sibiu now so I asked my hosts. They say these days the snow comes later than it used to, they used to always have snow by Xmas but now it depends. They suggest you watch the weather and decide at the last minute.
I was up on top of the range a few days ago, gorgeous barmy weather, no snow at all.
