I remembered watching this programme earlier in the year where this particular clip was used, but seeing it again on YouTube got me wondering where the location at 2:19m is:

I had assumed it's somewhere in Glasgow's city centre but maybe not. Anyone have any suggestions?

On the basis that the road is flat it's likely to be an East-West street. There you go, that's halfed the problem...

I think it might be Sauchiehall Street looking toward Charing Cross.

I wondered if that was the now gone StEnoches station hotel at bottom of the road...

The destination on the tram says kirklee so going West?

In reply to Fraser:

Buchanan St. was never a tram route.

Suachiehall St. west of Char X, with a tram turning out of North St. and a dim Char X Mansions ahead, was my first guess, but I can't get the buildings on the left to fit - there were no buildings fronting the street after the Grand Hotel, just a series of terraces set back from the road.

I'll ask around.

Another one said Scotstoun with Partick below it.

At 55 seconds in taken from High on the hill looking down a street to cranes on a river, that looks like Gardner street.
If you then look at Google maps and follow the line of Gardner street you will see that goes straight to Glasgow Harbour.

Have a look on Virtual Mitchell website for thousands of searchable older photos of Glasgow.

In reply to streapadair:

If wondered about the bit just west of Charing Cross too, but the theoretical 'mansions' roof line doesn't fit, plus it also appears to be looking slightly downhill in that scene. Had also wondered about somewhere round about the St Vincent Street / Renfield St, but having the big building at the end of the vista doesn't tie in with that option.

St Enoch Station/ Hotel might work maybe? Not familiar enough with what that building looked like.

JimC:

Cheers for the links - will check them out.

I'm also going to print off a still from the clip and have a wander round the southern part of the City centre. I found a site with the old tram routes marked on it so that should help. Will keep this post informed ....and keep the suggestions coming!

I've raised the question on another forum, and rather than relay the replies I'll just give you the link -

Cheers for doing that. I think both he and Norrie are right in saying it's the corner of Renfield St. & Sauchiehall St. Checking this link:

http://www.glasgowhistory.com/sauchiehall-street.html

...the 6th and, better, the 7th large photo down the page show the corner in question from street level and slightly further south on the pavement. You can see the building which was on the NE corner of the junction, (now occupied by the recently refurbished office/retail block) which ties in bang on in terms of the architectural detailing both there and in the distance , at the former Parliamentary Rd. building.

Thanks again folks for the suggestions and links, problem solved!

Edit: for anyone interested, you can see the old street layout here:

Tram intersection in the lower rhs of the map.

I tried to find the square clock on the left at 9secs in, on the shop front photos on Virtual Mitchell website, no luck, any idea what building it is on Street/No.?

Great wee link, thanks, this had kept me off lots of other jobs.

In reply to Jim C:

Yep, think I've got that one. It's on Hope Street, just south of the junction with St Vincent St, looking north. St Vincent Lane is immediately on the left, disappearing out of view. According to Google street view, the shop with the clock is now 'Cafe Fame'.
