I'm not a runner so go easy.

In fact I've done nothing in the way of exercise for the last 18 months so I thought I'd get back on it after having our first child. I've climbed about once a month and worked but no CV stuff at all.

My first 5k time was 21:30, pretty pleased! Second run tonight in the pouring rain, 20:20. Well chuffed... Until I did a map my run thing and discovered my route was 4.3k I thought it felt a bit easy. Ha ha.

I've worked out an extension to take it to 5k so we'll see next time I head out. I recon 23:something should be do-able. Then I can can aim to get back down to 20 something where I thought I was... Enjoying it so far.

Your Jap's eye must have been a stretched after pushing out your first child. Did they give you gas and air?

I run quite a bit and tend to do 10km at around 50 mins so a good 5k time for me as part of that is about 24 mins. I wouldn't be too worried.

It was until you listened in.

Try some slower longer 6-8 milers for aerobic and bang in a few interval/sprint sessions for your anaerobic training and you should see your times drop. I'm no expert but it worked for me

Do you have a local Parkrun? You probably do. Accurately measured, timed, free and every Saturday morning at 9am.

The fact that you are racing against people will speed you up.

What other running do you do? If any.

I opened a restuarant once which specialised in Japanese/Thai/Italian fusion dishes. It was called Japs Eye Thai, wasn't much of a success unfortunately...

Not a runner? A sub 25 would do me! (And I would certainly call myself a runner based on your times. I ran 10k (mixed terrain) last night in the rain and it took me 58 minutes.

There is a park run near by. In fact 2 within half an hour. Maybe I'll sign up. Or do I just turn up?

I've done a couple of half marathons for charity a good few years back but nothing since. I was a reasonable mtb'er when I raced. Pretty good general fitness, just never run regularly. It's time to get back on it if only for winter approaches.

I've been doing the Hallam park run on and off this year and I'm really impressed by it all. Registration is easy and then all you have to do is print off your barcode - you can do it without registering, but by registering your results are recorded so you can see your progression. Helps motivation.

At some point I'd like to try some of the other ones in Sheffield, or elsewhere in the country, but having within walking distance makes it really easy.

Pretty sure you run faster when in a race than on your own, so you'll probably find yourself getting down to 20 mins quite quickly. I broke 25 mins for the first time a few weeks back, which may not be very impressive in the scheme of things but is a milestone for me !

That'd get you fired if you worked on Top Gear.

You need to register with the park run system and print off a bar code, then you can just turn up...
