I bought some new climbing shoes and paid at an automated checkout and forgot to remove the plastic disk on them. I think it squirts ink out or something.

Is there a safe way to remove these without getting ink all over the shoes?

Cheers

Take them back and pay for them

It does sound suspicious I know. Fortunately I have the receipt so I can take them back if I have to, it'd just be easier not to have to go back into town.

But I imagine that this must be a fairly common mistake at auto-checkouts.

I'm pretty sure the devices they use to remove the tags are just big magnets so you could try this approach first.

They use a large magnet with a hole in the middle I think.

Here you go, apparently putting the tag in the freezer overnight stops the ink from running everywhere.

I think I'd wrap it in clingfilm first as a precaution.

Take it to a shop (pretty much any shop) with the receipt, smile, tell your story, ask for help.

Cut the nipple thing off with a hacksaw and tap the pin out, tape the ink bit up first if you like ,

Thanks for the replies. Finally took them back to the store. As I went an alarm went off and I got instant service by a security guard. He was familiar with the problem and said it happened quite often. No queuing and waiting around and it took about a minute to sort out.
