Framing maps cheaply?

Random question, now I'm erm... older, I think I've moved beyond just sellotaping or bluetacking maps (about 90 x 130 cm) to walls, and I'd like to get a couple framed in simple wooden frames. Except having looked about the cheapest I can find to get them done works out at about £100 each.

Any other options? Spray glue/mount them to the wall? Give up and be happy to be an eternal teenager?

Frame them yourself. Aldi often sell the kits. You just need some framing wood, hardboard and glass cut to size. Then a bit of patence and time.

Yeah, and some DIY skills. Hmmm... and getting glass cut seems to costs a fortune, But thanks, will have a look!

Not sure but Ikea might do some frames? Not sure about sizes either, but might be worth a look?

Tried thanks, but none big enough.

Perhaps the bottom line here is the word cheap. If the minimum cost of framing, either diy or otherwise is too expensive perhaps you are best off sticking with bluetac?

Yeah, I was thinking I could get something for about £40-50. £100 for a basic wooden frame for a £12 map just seems loads.

Might give up and just hammer a load of nails in each corner. With a saucepan.

I've used wallpaper paste in the paste - I have old 1/4 inch OS maps of Scotland on one wall of a room, wallpapered on the walls. Works reasonably well, but it's quite permanent.

Yeah, might try that. Was thinking spray mount glue as well.

... And you could use some architrave profile to edge. It may then look like a framed print?

Have you spoken to a local picture framer? Some are admittedly ridiculously expensive but one I go to in Leicester can frame things as cheaply as I want him to (well, pretty much)

In reply to Ava Adore:

yeah, that was my first thought, so tried a few and they all quoted around £100-120 per map.

ikea do poster frames that are ~£15 each. They won't fit a full OS map but you can cut out a significant chunk.

In reply to JayPee630:

Using several smaller frames to make a feature might be cheaper if you can get cheap sizes from ikea etc.

Paste them on to foam board, including wrapping the edges, then mount the boards on the wall.

Second that. Spraymount for fixing it gives you the chance to lift it off the board if u make a tit of it first time.

Yeah, spray mount to a board is looking like the way to go. Found an online clip frame maker for about £60 so might get one of those too.

Those Ikea frames are just a bit too small and since one of them is a world map it'd look a bit odd if I chopped some of it off!

You can get frames made to size online, theres loads of websites, I have had several made.

I've used http://www.pictureframesexpress.co.uk/ and http://www.eframe.co.uk/custom-frames both were good

MDF is also worth a look. A quick paint with white emulsion and it's ready for the map. B&Q will cut it to the size you need for free if you don't have any woodworky skills.
