Taking in three areas mooted for inclusion in an expanded Yorkshire Dales National Park, this long circuit of the upper Lune Valley watershed gives an excellent weekend's backpacking off the beaten track. Each of the three hill stages has its own distinct character - the extensive limestone pavements of the little-known Orton Fells; the bulging grassy slopes and secretive dales of the northern Howgills, and the impressive escarpment of plateau-topped Wild Boar Fell.
