Looking to get mum some snow shoes for Christmas, since we are spending Christmas in the Alps and she does not ski.

Anybody got any advice on what to get, she is 66 years old and normal build. She is not going to go running up 4000 meter peaks, so they do not have to be hardcore.

I do not have a clue there seems to be a large choice, any ideas?
Thanks
Mark

I have been happy with pair made by TSL of France. They seem suit the more humid and icy snow conditions that we get in the Alps better than some of the American models.
Mine are TSL 225, now replaced by TSL 226. However, depending on her weight, your mum might be better of with TSL 206.

Yeap, we also have TSL ones, and they seem to do the job fine. Ours are on step in bindings, but they do ones with straps.

In reply to Blinder: It is quite an expensive present if she is only going to use them for the one trip as to hire them is only about 5€ per day. I guess it depends if she is going to take it up as a sport!

If so i would agree that TSL are a good make

We bought these in France for about £90 and were good fun and pretty essential getting to and from my cottage and in our local hills last year

Similar models are stocked in most ski area hire depts in France which cater for the more mature hiker!

In reply to Undiscovered Alps: Decathlon used to sell a very basic, but cheap model - if its for occasional use they would probably be adequate so worth checking

The TSL ones (they have a huge range of different shapes/sizes/options/bindings) are fine for strolling around on waymarked trails. MSR would be my recommendation for anything more technical or in deeper, softer snow.

You can hire them very cheaply in any ski resort - will certainly cost a lot less to hire for a week than to buy a pair.

You should look at Yowies:

Light, and very easy to walk in. Much more natural gait than many others I've used.

Snap. I've got the 225, my wife has the 206. I think we got both from Decathlon, although it was in France. I used mine to get to work one day last winter.
