Interesting. I usually make it higher so I can sit up, have ever hardly used a saw and hardly ever have the trench going so far in (floor space).

Believe me, in poor weather and in the circumstances which might dictate an enforced snow cave, you ain't going to have time or energy to dig something that spacious!

In reply to morphus: Good video and looks a pretty efficient way of building a snow shelter, albeit on the luxury side for survival - but no where near the type of luxury you can get if you've got hours to waste! One problem in Scotland is getting the depth of snow (into the hill) - so often snow shelters have to be dug across the hill rather than into it...
