The various small crags around Penha Garcia are located on the north-facing walls, next to the castle fortifications, the mills and typical Beira stone houses alongside the Pônsul river. The environment is very relaxing and, during hot days, it is possible to have a swim in the local pool or at the dam.
There are some interesting routes on vertical or slabby quartzite and makes an ideal venue for climbers looking for fun lower grade sport climbs with easy access.
A good topo can be found in the photos here.
From Lisbon, head north on the A1, then take the A23 all the way until the exit to Alcains. Follow directions to the historical village of Monsanto, and continue eastwards to Monfortinho until Penha Garcia shows up on the hillside to the left of the road.
Access to each crag is obvious from the marked path.
