Lierres is a small, sheltered canyon cut into the lower slopes of Mount Faron. Usefully there is an easy slabby section, an area of steep wall climbs and a cave full of desperates. The area is sheltered from the wind though, in the depths of winter, the slabby walls and the cave see precious little sunshine. The enclosed nature of much of the cliff means it is rather slow to dry, after rain there are better cliffs in the area. Many of the easier routes are very polished, an application of Sika to some of the holds has helped reduce the problem - a little.
The crag is sheltered and sunny, except in the depths of winter when surrounding hills block the sun. Seepage can be a problem. It is a good crag when the Mistral is blowing.
Lierres is the final crag covered on Mount Faron, and, as with the others, start by aiming for the lower station of the Téléphérique. The coastal A50 (eastern) A57 (western) motorways have a 2.5km section of ‘normal’ trunk road passing through the centre of Toulon, just north of the port. Turn north from the end of either motorway (signed 'Toulon Centre'). Mount Faron and its Téléphérique are sign-posted from the city, if in doubt, keep heading due north (uphill). At the Téléphérique station, turn right, in front of the station access on to the Montée Saint-Charles, and drive 350m to an odd, oblique cross-roads. Go straight across this to locate the parking on the outside of a sharp right bend across the valley in 250m. The path leads up into the canyon, the nearest routes are only five minutes away. Lierres Rond Point is a couple of minutes further up the road, but not yet on the one-way system.
Google thinks that the road is one way from the "oblique crossroads", but it is wrong. The no entry sign you can see in StreetView has a little "1km" under it. You can still drive to Rond Point, as of April 23. Set the crossroads in your navigation and just drive acoustically the rest of the way alr1970 - 14/Apr/23 |
